Brick Pizza Oven | 2019-2020

School: Nānākuli High & Intermediate School
Grade Level: Grades 9-12
Teacher: Myles Murakami

Driving Question: How can we design and build a high-quality brick oven that will last and cook food as efficiently as possible?

Students researched earthen oven designs and the history of their usage throughout different civilizations. They designed a concept dome brick oven for cooking and estimated the amount and kinds of materials. After reflecting on their design, they revised it to a rectangular model and started construction of the oven with fire brick and mortar clay. Students learned masonry skills, mathematics, scale drawing, and usage of power tools.
