Māla | 2019-2020

School: Ka Waihona o Ka Na’auao Public Charter School
Grade Level: Grade 4
Teacher: Carla Kahiapo, Joanna Hirota, and Kelii Marotte

Diving Question: How can we connect to a sustainable garden we create?

Through explorations in their 4th-grade māla, students were able to find hands-on, relevant applications for concepts taught in class. This included math, reading, science, social studies, art, and more. Students also had farm-to-table experiences growing, cooking, and eating the produce, they grew in fun ways, thus growing their food IQs. Students kept a field notebook of data they collected, written reflections, quick-writes, sketches, and just about anything a good field researcher would include. Fun was had by all along with some amazing learning.
