Loko Iʻa | 2019-2020

School: Ka Waihona o Ka Na’auao Public Charter School
Grade Level: Tech
Teacher: Char Woodwoard

Diving Question: How do we use technology to mālama our loko iʻa?

Middle school students explored ʻike kūpuna technologies involved in ancient fishponds. The project included a kick-off event that found students immersed in cleaning, cooking, and eating fish caught in their coastal waters. They also spent time doing kilo (observation)exercises and activities, as well as imu (seaweed) gathering and art (limu press). These activities were meant to hook them into the project and start them thinking around their connections to the oceans, fish, fishponds, and ancestral technologies and knowledge.
