Stargazing Night | 2019-2020

School: Ka Waihona o Ka Na’auao Public Charter School
Grade Level: Grade 8 Science
Teacher: Puanani White

Diving Question: How we connect traditional knowledge and modern technology to study Earth’s predictable movements in the solar system?

This project was to take what students learned about the motions of the earth, moon, and placement with stars to host a stargazing event for families. This family event was to take place on campus, after dark, where students and families could rotate through stations that included observation (kilo), stories and legends (mo’olelo), learning of moon phases/moon phase song, use of iPads and the StarWalk app to locate stars, and the use of a telescope lent from the Astrological Society of Hawai’i.
