Guardians of the Garden

School: Nānāikapono Elementary School
Grade Level: Grades 4-6
Teacher: Wendy Gumm, Luania Sula

Driving Question: What kind of skills can I learn from nurturing a garden?

What did the students DO?

Our PALS Guardians of the Garden honed in on a multitude of skills through gardening and making connections between caring for a garden and caring for self.  Beyond caring for their garden through planting, plant care, garden maintenance and harvesting,  students worked on growing their own community building skills including effective communication, creative thinking and planning.  They also experienced art adventures through creating a rock garden and painting new wooden garden posts.  Students especially enjoyed harvesting and creating simple dishes “in the kitchen” and running a “Garden On Wheels”, which allowed them to give back to the school community by providing plants they cultivated and cared for over the year.  Their plant giveaway was also a hit at the PALS hōʻike as visiting families and community members were able to receive plants to take home to their home gardens compliments of these amazing little gardeners.
