Driving Question: How do we, as musicians, use ʻukulele to share and enhance our musical knowledge, so that music is enjoyed throughout the community?
What did the students DO?
This group has developed a strong foundation in music, focusing on singing, ukulele, and rhythm. With consistent practice, they’ve progressed in both individual and group performance, engaging their ‘ohana through parent viewings and preparing for a final performance at Hoʻike.
- Musical Skills Development: Students are learning tempo, beat, note reading, singing, and strumming the ukulele. Kumu Nicole teaches pitch and notes, incorporating movement and rhythm games to keep the sessions fun and interactive. Younger students enjoy singing while older students focus on mastering the ukulele.
- Song and Instrument Practice: Students have picked up the ukulele and learned new chords, in addition to working on rhythm and tone. The group learns songs designed to enhance their rhythm, tone, and tempo awareness. Ukulele sessions are lively, with students showing excitement and determination.
- Showcase and Parent Involvement: A parent viewing day allowed students to perform their ukulele playing and singing for their ʻohana, showcasing their progress. The program prepared for their performance at Hoʻike.
The music program has provided these haumana with a creative outlet to explore their musical talents, build confidence, and foster teamwork. Through consistent practice and learning, they’ve gained valuable skills in both music and performance. The resilience shown by the group, especially in continuing preparations for Hoʻike despite challenges, speaks to their dedication and passion for music.
