Outdoor STEAM

School: Kamaile Academy Public Charter School
Grade Level: Grades 3-6
Teacher: Joe Stockglausner

Driving Question: How does mindfulness and art/indoor steam help improve coping skills, problem solving, and personal growth?

What did the students DO?

The Outdoor STEAM group participated in outdoor art activities.  Students used everyday recyclable materials such as bottle caps, leaves, branches, scrap paper, pipe cleaners, and more to create their art pieces.  Some of their favorite projects included watercolor and canvas painting, creating B-I-N-G-O with sidewalk chalk, making traditional Hawaiian kapa (fabric made from tree bark) and painting with acrylics.

Influenced by their teacher’s love of nature and calm demeanor, students embraced their outdoor surroundings as they created art pieces and worked at the art of patient, collaborative communication and cooperation with each other.
