Driving Question: How do we, as keiki of Kamaile, experience ola kino and create healthy habits to expand our quality of life?
What did the students DO?
This group has been actively engaged in physical fitness through weekly hikes and a variety of on-campus activities. Using the Kamaile bus for reliable transportation, students follow a structured hiking schedule and participate in activities that promote endurance, teamwork, and community connection. New activities such as pickleball and preparation for the Keiki Great Aloha Run have expanded their opportunities for movement and skill-building.
- Weekly Hikes: Students actively participate in weekly hikes that help build physical endurance while deepening their appreciation for the natural environment and the beauty of their island home. These hikes also foster teamwork, self-discipline, and a sense of connection to ʻāina.
- Kamaile Bus Transportation: The group benefits from the use of Kamaile’s dedicated bus system, which provides safe and reliable transportation to various hiking locations. This logistical support has contributed to the smooth execution of the program and expanded the range of hiking destinations.
- Consistent Attendance & Schedule: Steady attendance and adherence to a regular hiking schedule have demonstrated the students’ ongoing commitment to personal growth, wellness, and participation. The structured weekly rhythm also reinforces responsibility and accountability among haumāna.
- Introduction to Pickleball: In addition to hiking, students were introduced to pickleball as a fun and engaging way to improve coordination, strategy, and physical fitness. They worked together to prepare the basketball courts for play and began familiarizing themselves with the equipment and game rules.
- Keiki Great Aloha Run Participation: Students are preparing to take part in the Keiki Great Aloha Run, joining other youth across the island in an event that promotes health, community spirit, and perseverance. This experience allows students to feel a sense of accomplishment and belonging in a larger community of active learners.
- Hoʻike Demonstration Preparation: To celebrate their growth, students are preparing a demonstration for the school’s annual Hoʻike. This presentation will highlight the skills, stamina, and dedication they have developed throughout the year and will serve as a meaningful reflection of their achievements.
This program successfully cultivates physical fitness, teamwork, and a connection to ʻāina through consistent outdoor activities and group collaboration. Students demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm, developing healthy habits and resilience. By introducing new sports and participating in community events, they deepen their sense of kuleana and aloha for both their physical well-being and the natural environment. This focus on active engagement supports their overall growth and fosters a lifelong appreciation for fitness and the outdoors.
