Na Hoa Mele

School: Ka Waihona o Ka Na’auao Public Charter School
Grade Level: Grade 3
Teacher: Kumu Maile Naki

Driving Question: How can we (Grade 3) impact our community positively through music here in Hawaiʻi and around the world?

What did the students DO?

Originally a student chorus, Nā Hoa Mele changed its focus from choral music to learning through exploring and researching various musical instruments and genres.  Students also learned traditional Hawaiian oli and mele and performed at school assemblies and at the PALS hōʻike.  More exciting for the students is that they were able to learn to play the ʻukulele, some for the very first time, and were given the opportunity for purchasing their own ʻukulele they could take home and keep.
