What did the students DO?
This group joined the PALS ʻohana in the second semester and quickly immersed themselves in the world of visual art. Their journey began by observing the works of Vincent Van Gogh, followed by hands-on drawing and painting sessions that reflected his unique techniques. From canvas paintings to collages and free painting, the students have been actively exploring various art forms and experimenting with different artistic styles. Their works were proudly featured at the annual PALS Hoʻike, receiving warm appreciation from families and the community.
- Introduction to Vincent Van Gogh: The group began their artistic journey by observing the works of Vincent Van Gogh, focusing on his signature brushstroke techniques and expressive use of color. Students engaged in thoughtful discussion and visual analysis to better understand the mood and emotion behind his famous sunflower series.
- Mini Canvas Painting Project: Each haumāna recreated a variation of Van Gogh’s iconic sunflower painting using acrylic paint on a mini canvas. They practiced layering, blending, and texture techniques to capture the movement and emotion of Van Gogh’s original work. The resulting pieces were both vibrant and unique to each student’s interpretation.
- Exploration of Mixed Media: Beyond painting, the students experimented with other art forms such as collage-making and detailed sketching. These projects encouraged individual expression while building familiarity with different artistic materials and tools.
- Art Style Studies & Reproductions: The group continued their art education by studying the techniques of various renowned artists. They recreated famous works and developed original compositions inspired by those styles, deepening their understanding of artistic expression and creative decision-making.
- PALS Hoʻike Art Exhibition: At the year-end PALS Hoʻike, the students proudly displayed their art collection. Their canvas paintings, collages, and drawings were beautifully presented for parents and community members to enjoy. The display reflected not only their artistic growth but also their pride and confidence as young artists.
This visual art program provided students with an enriching space to develop artistic skills, confidence, and creative expression. Through the study of artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and others, students gained insight into technique, style, and interpretation while crafting both reproductions and original works. Their participation in the Hoʻike exhibition celebrated their growth and shared the beauty of their learning journey with the larger community, fostering pride, connection, and a deepened appreciation for the arts.
