Aloha Aku, Aloha Mai | 2023-2024

School: Nānāikapono Elementary School
Grade Level: Grades K-6
Teacher: Kahealani Paogofie

Driving Question: How do we, as keiki, create aloha experiences for others and ourselves through our relationships to our place and each other?

What did the students DO?

This new group, beginning in February, has focused on creating meaningful aloha experiences for their school community through upcycling, cultural learning, and community connection. Inspired by place-based learning, they have incorporated Hawaiian cultural values into their projects and will end the year by showcasing their work at the PALS Hōʻike in May.

  • Upcycled Creations: The haumāna repurposed paper from the teacher’s lounge to create notepads and made signs from recycled paper to encourage the recycling of cans and bottles on campus.
  • Native Plant Education: Drawing inspiration from a visit to Papahana Kuaola, the group researched native plants found on campus and began exploring ways to educate fellow students, staff, and the community about their cultural and ecological significance.
  • Community Games & Activities: Students designed and prepared games to share with their school community and kūpuna, promoting joy, interaction, and intergenerational connections.
  • Field Experiences: The group participated in two ALL PALS field experiences this month, building teamwork, strengthening bonds, and gathering inspiration for their upcoming Hōʻike presentation.

This group embodies the spirit of aloha by combining creativity, sustainability, and cultural awareness. Through their upcycled projects, native plant education, and interactive activities, they are fostering connections to place, promoting environmental stewardship, and enriching relationships within the school and community.
