Driving Question: How do we, as young engineers, utilize the engineering design process; design, build, document, program and compete with an electro-mechanical machine as well as completing the necessary requirements to gain academic certifications?
What did the students DO?
This dedicated robotics team has been working diligently toward their goal of competing in tournaments and ultimately qualifying for the World’s Championship Tournament in Dallas. They balance their rigorous practice schedules with creative fundraising efforts, including monthly car washes, to cover travel and competition costs. Their commitment extends beyond regular meeting times, as they dedicate weekends and additional hours to perfect their skills and support one another.
- Community Car Wash Fundraisers: In partnership with Regina from Maluhia Lutheran Church, the team has hosted monthly car washes in the church parking lot. These events raise funds for tournament fees, gas, supplies, and potential travel expenses, reflecting the team’s strong initiative and community engagement.
- Independent Program Management: Under the leadership of Mr. Joshua Arant and community partner Roger Kiyota, the robotics team has grown into an independent, self-sustaining program. They operate with a high level of responsibility, organization, and teamwork, requiring little outside support.
- Tournament Participation: The team competed consistently throughout the year, demonstrating technical skill, strategic thinking, and collaboration. While they did not advance to states or the world competition, their perseverance and sportsmanship stood out.
- Commitment to Improvement: Even with fewer weekly meetings, the team has remained dedicated to practicing regularly and putting in extra time on weekends. Their persistence reflects a long-term vision of returning stronger in future competitions.
The robotics team’s journey this year exemplifies resilience, self-reliance, and the power of goal-oriented teamwork. Their ability to balance competition, fundraising, and independent program management speaks to their maturity and commitment. They inspire the community and set a standard for determination and perseverance.
