Girls Running Club | 2022-2023

School: Nānāikapono Elementary School
Grade Level: Grades 5-6
Teacher: Alexis Prei

Driving Question: How do we, as teammates, support each other in order to push past our personal expectations and improve our well-being?

What did the students DO?

The Girls on the Run PALS group Nānāikapono Elementary School has supported a group of haumāna in building physical strength, confidence, and endurance through regular stretching and running sessions. With dedication and determination, these wāhine reached major milestones—running a mile each program day—and trained for several local events. Their journey, enriched through collaboration with the Living Pono group, reflects a deep commitment to health, perseverance, and lāhui pride.

  • Physical Fitness: Participants have achieved the impressive goal of running at least one mile every program day. These sessions are paired with cardio and stretching activities through collaboration with the Living Pono group, helping to build strength, balance, and flexibility.
  • Event Participation: The girls have shown their commitment by participating in local community runs, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation run at Ko Olina, the Keiki Great Aloha Run in February, and the Rainbow Run in April. These events provide opportunities to apply their training in real-world settings and contribute to important causes.
  • Goal Tracking: Each haumāna tracks her own running record weekly. Students consistently run one to two miles around the school campus, which has resulted in notable improvements in stamina, consistency, and motivation.

This program empowers young wāhine to develop healthy habits and self-confidence through physical activity, goal setting, and teamwork. By taking part in structured running programs and community events, participants gain resilience, pride, and a deeper understanding of their own strength—both physical and emotional. The spirit of kōkua (support) and holomua (progress) is at the heart of this journey, demonstrating the impact of nurturing both mind and body in a safe and supportive environment.
