Waiʻanae Elementary Garden | 2019-2020

School: Waiʻanae Elementary School
Grade Level: 3-6
Teacher: Ann Kaai and Peyton Sarano

Driving Question: As stewards of the land, how can we take ownership in bringing back our cultural practices in maintaining a functional garden through school and communal effort which will help sustain our people?

Students explored various methods for controlling weeds in their gardens. The group split into two groups. One group used weed whackers, shovels, and picks to manually control the weeds growing in the garden. The other group conducted some internet research and made a DIY soap and vinegar solution to spray on the weeds to monitor whether spraying the weeds would control their overgrowth. They noticed some results in controlling the weeds, but there were some concerns about the solution affecting the plants they were trying to grow.
